Moana Taka Partnership

Moving eligible waste from island nations to accredited recycling and disposal facilities

A collaborative initiative between Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and Swire Shipping to ship eligible non-commercial waste on pro bono basis between approved ports.

Address critical waste management issues in the Pacific
Alleviates waste burden on island nations
Ensures responsible recycling and processing
Helps to prevent ocean pollution and supports biodiversity
Drives circular economy

What is Moana Taka Partnership?

Considering the challenges faced by Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), Swire Shipping and Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2018 to address critical waste management issues in the PICTs under the Moana Taka Partnership (MTP).

MTP helps alleviate the burden of waste in the PICTs by utilising Swire Shipping vessels to transport non-commercial recyclable and disposable waste. This waste is transported to countries with appropriate waste recycling or disposal facilities, ensuring that everything from oil to plastics to aerosols are properly recycled or disposed.

This partnership plays a vital role in advancing the circular economy by enabling access to international waste management and recycling infrastructure.

All SPREP member PICTs are eligible to apply for the MTP initiative. However, as Swire Shipping does not service all international ports, certain segments of the shipment may need to be transported via a third-party vessel. Any associated third-party or feeder vessel costs will be applied, and these charges will be the responsibility of the shipper. The ports indicated on the map represent locations serviced by Swire Shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

MTP is intended for Pacific Island governments, public authorities, recycling and collection facilities, and approved organisations that lack local capacity to safely manage certain waste streams.

Eligible waste streams include plastics, paper, cardboard, glass, used oil, e waste, ozone depleting substances, and other non commercial recyclable or hazardous materials approved under the programme.

Participation is open to all SPREP member Countries and Territories. However, Swire Shipping does not service all SPREP member ports. Where a shipment requires transfer via a feeder vessel to connect with the Swire Shipping network, any additional costs will be the responsibility of the applicant.
